Major Smith is the Assistant Chief of Investigations, covering Criminal Investigations Division, Crime Scene Investigations, Juvenile Investigations Division, Special Investigations Division, Special Operations Division, Hi-Tech / Cyber Crimes Division, Juvenile Justice Division US Marshal’s Office Liaison: Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigations/Joint Terrorism Task Force (FBI-JTTF), United States Secret Service (USSS), Special Response Team (SRT) and Mobile Field Team (MFFT).
Education & Training
Major Smith graduated from Hahnville High School 1990. Two weeks after graduation, Major Smith joined the United States Navy and attended boot camp in San Diego, California. Upon graduating boot camp, Major Smith was flown to Okinawa, Japan where he was assigned to the USS Kiska AE-35 (Ammunition Ship). While deployed, Major Smith spent 9 months in the Persian Gulf, during Operation Desert Storm. Major Smith is a graduate of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office P.O.S.T. Academy in 1993 and the FBI’s Instructor Development Course in 2008. In 2012 Captain Smith graduated from the National Institute for Truth Verification utilizing Computer Voice Stress Recognition and in 2014 he became certified as an Advance Examiner for C.V.S.A. Captain Smith has completed over 5,000 hours of advanced law enforcement training, Recognizing Clandestine Labs, 1st Line Supervision, Elderly Services Officer. He is certified in interview and interrogations, homicide and robbery investigations, blood spatter recognition, courtroom testimony, active shooter training, Incident Command System (ICS), including ICS-300 & ICS-400 and many other disciplines of law enforcement. Major Smith also serves as a Louisiana P.O.S.T. Academy Instructor. Major Smith has been awarded two Distinguished Service Awards, two Merit Citations, three Unit Citations and two Letters of Commendation throughout his career.
St. Charles Service
Major Smith began his Law Enforcement career as a Correctional Officer in January 1993. While in Corrections, he has had the opportunity to work in Transportation, Court Security / Bailiff and Court School, before being assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division. There, he served as a Field Training Officer and attained the rank of Corporal. He was assigned as the Assistant Westbank Supervisor. After nearly eight years of service in the Patrol Division, Major Smith was assigned to Criminal Investigation Division, where he attained the rank of Sergeant and Lieutenant serving as Commander of CID.
Major Smith is currently a member of the National Sheriff's Association, Louisiana Sheriff’s Association, Narcotics/Violent Crimes Task Force, Louisiana Homicide Investigators Association Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #15, Regional Organized Crime Information Center, LeadsOnline, National White Collar Crime Center, National Association of Computer Voice Stress Analysts.
Major Smith currently resides in Des Allemands, La., and has two children, Bailey and Trevor.
